Being white and Hispanic, I find it hard to fit in or find people like me. I’m not ‘Mexican enough’ for the Hispanics, I cannot speak Spanish, and I’m always assumed white. I find it so frustrating to present myself as white and Hispanic because I have to speak Spanish or be ‘more Mexican’ to prove that I’m Hispanic. I don’t have the voice as a person to speak of my worth, but I have art to be that voice. I can express myself without being judged. Influences Women of color and people of color in general have been an immense influence on my artwork. I crave the representation of people of color because in this society, white is the dominant. We minorities need that representation and that voice to show that we are here and we are here to stay. I’d also like to also say that people of color who are LGBTQ have influenced me because if you’re not white and not straight or cis, chances are that you’re going to be shut out and likely dead or hurt. Experiences that have shaped you as an artist Definitely researching aggressions against people of color and LGBTQ has impacted how I created art. I’ve realized that representation matters because when you’re in a world with the majority being white, you get misconceptions and appropriation. I’ve noticed in magazines and those alike, the majority of the model consist of white people. And it’s difficult to find people of color in the magazines unless you get a magazine that is meant for that certain group of people. Knowing that there is a problem about that, I’m able to create awareness about that problem. |
