Artist Statement: What I tried to portray in this piece are my mixed emotions I have for a mass majority of my life. I fear about not being able to afford college. I'm constantly nervous about the next day of school. I'm anxious whenever I think about my crush. I get so depressed whenever I have to think about what am I going to do with my life after high school when I don't see a future for myself. I get angry whenever people are ignorant a**holes about important things.
Project 2: Self-Acceptance
Wacom tablet & GIMP Drawing 2016
Artist Statement: For this project, the key thing I need was negative space. This was a skill a struggled on for quite a long time. I finally came up with the skeleton. The meaning of this piece is somewhat personal for me, due to me having a low self-esteem and having difficulties on trying to accept that I am beautiful. This represents the reflection of someone who has a low self-esteem or finds themselves not beautiful. The skeleton shows that on the outside, we may not be physically beautiful, but in the inside, we are just as beautiful. And on the inside, we are all just the same. I chose yellow roses for the background because they symbolize cheerfulness and happiness. I chose them because the person is finally happy because they accepted themselves and they no longer have a low self-esteem. The hibiscus on the skull represents the beauty the person has found within themselves.
Project 1: Together At Last
Drawing paper and pencil Drawing 2016
Artist Statement: Typically from what I've seen in movies, TV shows and social media in general, they make one gays die and don't give them the happy ending. The heterosexual couple ends up with the happy ending while they make the gays have a sad ending with them both dying or the partner dying. I hate that they can't have a happy ending. In this piece, the gays get their happy ending. They found each other and they are happy together. While creating this piece, I wanted to portray people of color and people of color who are in the LGBT community. The girl on the left is a Latina and the girl on the right is Korean and plus size. I also gave the Korean girl leg hair because women are "suppose to" shave their body hair because they are women and that women "shouldn't" be hairy or have hair which is ridiculous.
